Company Christmas party in Rome: ideas, timing and venues

The Christmas party is often the one night of the year when the whole company gets together in the same place, away from the office. That's exactly why it's worth getting right: it's not about spending more, it's about booking early and thinking about who will be there. Here's how to plan one in Rome.
Book early
In Rome the most requested dates are Thursdays and Fridays from late November to 20 December, and the venues best suited to groups are often taken by October. If you still don't have a date by mid-November, two alternatives work well:
- a midweek evening (Tuesday or Wednesday), often on better terms;
- a lunch instead of a dinner, easier for colleagues with children or long commutes, and simple to fit into the working day.
January is underrated too: a "New Year dinner" costs less, finds everyone rested and doesn't clash with family celebrations.
Choose the format
- Seated dinner: the classic. It works well for up to 80-100 people; beyond that, conversation stays stuck at each table.
- Standing dinner or long aperitivo: people move around, and teams that never cross paths actually talk. Ideal for large groups and companies with lots of new joiners.
- Dinner plus after-party: dinner in one room, then music or a DJ in a separate space, so those who want to dance can, and those who want to talk can too.
Make everyone feel welcome
- Collect dietary requirements in advance (vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, allergies) and pass exact numbers to the venue.
- Offer alcohol-free drinks that are as thoughtful as the wine list.
- Keep speeches short: ten minutes at most, ideally before the first course.
- Think about getting home: a venue near a metro stop, or a shuttle at the end of the night, makes the evening easier for everyone.
Budget
Cost depends mostly on the pricing model: a per-person menu with drinks included, a minimum spend for exclusive use of a room, or venue hire plus separate catering. When you compare quotes, make sure they cover the same things: drinks, service, any DJ or music, number of hours, cloakroom. And ask when the final headcount must be confirmed, because last-minute absences are common in December.
